ISHReCA General Meeting, Burkina Faso, 2010, July 11-13

Theme: Evaluation of current and elaboration of future Capacity-Building mechanisms to strengthen the conduct, collaboration and co-ordination of health research in Africa.

Open to: researchers, policy makers, funders, public-private partnerships, multinational and private companies

Goal: Collect ideas, initiate new or strengthen partnerships and develop work plan to strengthen health research capacity in Africa

Overview:

ISHReCA, the Initiative to Strengthen Health Research Capacity in Africa, is holding its 4th general meeting to map the “menu of options” to meet gaps and opportunities, and identify enablers and barriers. This forum, sponsored by the Minister of Public Health of Burkina Faso, will provide a unique platform for researchers, policy-makers and funders to understand ISHReCA’s strategy and contribute to defining a clear roadmap for ISHReCA and health research in the continent driven by national agendas.

Nine key requirements have been identified: a legal framework in which research can flourish; an improved health research profile among policy makers, the media and the public; secondary-school and tertiary-school science education; the creation of career pathways that allow for the recruiting and retaining of scientific talent; the development of competitive grant and fellowship schemes by African institutions; and the use of funding mechanisms as drivers of change at African institutions.

The meeting will be moderated by Professor Nelson Sewankambo, ISHReCA Chair. Confirmed speakers include:

Dr Rob Ridley, WHO/TDR Director

Prof Thomas Nchinda, capacity building expert on health research in Africa

Dr Jimmy Whitworth, Wellcome Trust

Prof Hannah Akuffo, ESSENCE

Limited funding is available for African researchers and policy makers to attend the meeting (on a first come first serve basis for those submitting ideas of relevance to the conference theme).

Please send abstracts in English (ou en français) (registration is required) on or before March 8, 2010 to Dr Palmer Netongo at netongop@who.int.
